Coach Approach: Coach with Pressure, Not Stress

While reading, “You Win in the Locker Room First” by Jon Gordon & Mike Smith, the concept of applying PRESSURE, not STRESS, really struck a chord with me as a coach. Part of being a competitive athlete is the stress/pressure that comes with preparation & competition. How we nurture these in our team culture can create an environment that cultivates growth or one that impedes it.

When we put the emphasis on things we CAN NOT control, such as; scores & placement, we are creating a team culture rooted in STRESS. Focusing on factors that are extrinsic to the team can lead to anxiety, dejection, and a decrease in motivation.

“We need to get first place to have a successful season.”

“Anything below an 8/10 is unacceptable.”

Be careful about falling into this mindset, especially in our sport where the outcomes are subjective in nature.

Yet, when we apply PRESSURE to the things we CAN control, like; routine knowledge, work ethic, & teamwork, we create an environment that becomes intrinsically focused.

“If we prepare to our greatest ability & work towards as many of the requirements on the scoresheet as possible, then we've done our part.”

“We will add conditioning to practice to help with our endurance.”

This approach can foster feelings of determination, confidence, & belief, leading to not only an increase in motivation, but also perseverance when outcomes are not as desired.

Do you, as a coach, have any goals/beliefs that are rooted in stress instead of pressure? How could you help your team prepare and compete from a place of positive pressure?
