Dear Dancer: My Goal Is Confidence, Not Criticism (A Message From the Judge’s Table)

Dear Dancer,

Picture this moment: You’re standing in the backstage tunnel, listening to the bass reverberate through the floorboards. Your heart is pounding, your hands are slightly clammy, and as you peek out from the wings, you see the judges sitting behind the long table, pens in hand and scoresheets ready.

In that quiet second right before your music cues... what are you thinking?

If your inner voice is whispering, "I just hope they don't see my mistakes," I want to completely rewrite that narrative for you today.

THE JUDGE’S EYE TRANSLATION

I am not sitting behind that table looking for reasons to take points away from you. I am sitting there looking for every possible reason to give them to you.

I am looking for your passion, your dedication, your unique artistry, and that breathtaking moment on stage where you finally let go of the pressure and just dance.

When I give a comment on your critiques about a foot not being fully pointed or a transition being slightly off, it is never a personal judgment of who you are as a dancer. It is simply a roadmap designed to guide you toward your personal best.

THE CLARITY: HOW TO READ YOUR SCORESHEET THIS SEASON

To turn feedback into your ultimate superpower, here are three mindset shifts every competitive dancer needs to embrace:

1. A Comment is a Compliment

When a judge takes the time to give you detailed feedback, it means they see your potential and want to help you reach the next level. We don't give thoughtful notes for dancers we don't believe in, we give them because we know what you are capable of achieving!

2. Correction = Growth

The most elite dancers in the world aren't the ones who never receive critiques. They are the dancers who listen to those notes with an open mind and apply them the fastest. A critique isn't a wall stopping your progress; it's the bridge taking you to your next breakthrough.

3. Confidence is a Choice

True stage confidence doesn't come from being "perfect” because perfection doesn't exist in our subjective sport. You build true confidence by knowing you’ve put in the work, trusting in your training, and being brave enough to let yourself be fully seen on that floor.

LEAVING IT ALL ON THE FLOOR

The next time you walk out onto the stage and look down at the judges' table, take a deep breath and remember:

We are your biggest fans. We aren't sitting there to judge you harshly; we are sitting there rooting for your success.

Feedback isn't a critique, it’s clarity.

Now, step onto that floor, trust your journey, and go leave it all out there!
