Impact Dance Consulting The Dancer Download: I’M NOT JUDGING YOU. I’M JUDGING THE MOMENT. (It’s about WHERE you are, not WHO you are.) Original post date Novemeber 4, 2026
Hey Dancer,
Let’s be completely honest about something: Dancing is one of the most vulnerable things a person can do.
When you step out onto that stage, you aren't just demonstrating steps, you are offering up a piece of your heart, your emotions, and your soul. You expose your passion to an entire room of strangers. That willingness to be open and vulnerable is precisely what makes us as judges and audience members lean in, feel goosebumps, and connect with you. Vulnerability is your magic.
So when the awards are announced or you listen back to an audio critique and hear notes on what needs fixing, it can feel deeply personal. It’s so easy to let a score or a correction feel like a sting to your self-worth, making you think: "I did something wrong. I wasn't enough."
When that sting happens, a natural defense mechanism kicks in. Dancers start to pull inward, build a protective wall, and quiet their emotional expression. But I am writing to you today with a crucial message straight from the judge’s table:
THE INSIDER SCOOP
I am not judging YOU. I am judging the MOMENT.
A scoresheet is simply a snapshot of two minutes in time, a brief window where lighting, nerves, floor slickness, and muscle memory all intersect.
Feedback is about WHERE you are in your journey, not WHO you are as an artist.
If you want to protect your love for dance and stay open on stage, here is your official judge's download.
The Download: Protecting Your Vulnerability
1. Feedback Highlights "Where," Not "Who"
When a judge points out a bent knee, a rushed transition, or a loss of expression, it is not a declaration of your talent or character. It’s simply constructive feedback telling you, "This is where your training is thriving and where your best opportunities for growth are hiding." It shows your location on the map, not your destination.
2. Don't Let a Critique Build a Wall
The moment you receive feedback that doesn't align with how you felt you performed, resist the urge to retreat into your shell. When you pull into yourself to protect your feelings, you accidentally shut the audience out. The moment you stop being vulnerable is the moment the magic fades. Take a deep breath, accept the feedback, and keep your heart wide open.
3. The Art Requires the Risk
Sharing your soul on stage always carries the risk of a score that doesn't match your effort. But the risk is worth it! The most breathtaking dancers aren't the ones who protect themselves from feedback, they are the ones who are brave enough to grow, stay authentic, and keep dancing with absolute vulnerability.
The Clarity: Stay Open
Your value as a human and an artist is infinite. A judge’s critique is never a personal attack; it is a roadmap designed to help you shine even brighter.
Separate where you are today from who you are deep inside. Protect your vulnerability, trust your growth, and never close your heart to the room.
I’m proudly in your corner, and I can't wait to see you shine!
