MINDSET CHECK: PERSONAL POWER STATEMENTS
A Dose Of Danspiration- Mindset Check- “Personal Power Statements”
Mantras are words or phrases that are repeated a loud or thought repeatedly. Many elite athletes use mantras, or what I like to call “Power Statements” to take their performance to the next level. Some simple mantras that are commonly used are: “I’ve got this!” and “I can do this!”
It’s been proven that the use of positive self-thought & power statements have several benefits.
Isn’t it fascinating that researchers & scientists have visually witnessed PHYSIOLOGICAL changes, such as; a decrease in cortisol levels (reducing stress) & MENTAL changes, such as; the strengthening of neural pathways in the brain (causing greater mental focus). Both causing an EMOTIONAL change allowing the mind & body to remain calm & focused.
I personally find empowerment in the use of “I AM” statements. “I AM” statements guide your mind & actions towards who you are & who you want to be.
I AM Focused
I AM Strong
I AM Calm
I AM Ready
I AM Improving
To take your mental preparation to the next level, take some time & create your own personal power statements.
Some guidelines:
• #1 & MOST IMPORTANT: Keep them short & positive!
• #2: Create power statements for different settings: Some for practice, some for competition, & some for other day to day moments where you may need to give yourself a little extra encouragement.
• #3 PRACTICE!!: Just like our physical habits, we need to practice our mental habits. Practice your power statements BEFORE you need them. This way when a challenge arises, you are already mentally prepared to call upon them. Also, while practicing your power statements, utilize calm, centered breathing (ex: the 4-7-8 method), close your eyes, & visualize what the statement looks like for you.
Remember, strengthening your mental game is just as important as all the physical training you do. Taking care of the mind will help you become not only a better dancer, but a calmer, more confident version of yourself!
