The Judge’s Eye: Why Clean Routines May Not Score High
Impact Dance Consulting Judge’s Eye Series Episode #7- Why Clean Routine Still May Not Score High Original post date September 21, 2026
We have all been there. You spend hours in the studio drilling counts, adjusting spacing, and making sure every single arm path matches down to the millimeter. The routine looks immaculate. It is perfectly clean.
Yet, when awards roll around, the routine places behind a routine that felt visibly less polished.
As a coach, it is a heartbreaking moment. You wonder what the panel missed, or what you did wrong. But as a judge, I can tell you what probably happened:the routine checked two of the baseline boxes (execution and spacing), but missed the third, to tell a “story” (the perfromance).
Cleanliness is an absolute requirement at competition, it is a foundational element. However, from the judge’s chair, a perfectly clean routine is simply the expectation. It is where the true competition begins, not where it is won. To stand out, we have to go beyond the memorized movement and see visual and emotional sincerity.
THE "WHAT" VS. THE "WHY"
Dancers are incredible physical athletes. They excel at memorizing movement order and executing them on specific counts. But if your team is moving on count 4 simply because that is the next step in the routine, the performance instantly hits an artistic ceiling.
The View from the Panel: Judges can feel the difference between a routine that is memorized and a routine that is understood. When a team only focuses on the "what," the dance looks mechanical. We stop watching the art form and start checking off the checklist of execution. We aren't just looking to see what you're doing on count 4; we want to see why it matters.
THE "SAFE PERFORMANCE" TRAP
In the fierce pursuit of keeping a routine perfectly uniform, a dangerous habit often forms in the rehearsal room: teams start playing it safe. Dancers hold back their physical energy, shorten their extensions, or tone down their power to ensure they do not miss a count or drop out of formation.
While playing it safe might keep your formations locked in, it completely drains the routine of its texture. Safe performance choices do not command a room or break through a long day of judging.
True commitment requires consistent power generated directly from the core through the limbs, and out through the emotional expression, sustained effortlessly from the opening picture to the final pose.
VISUAL CLARITY VS. VISUAL SINCERITY
We have all seen teams execute an incredibly difficult technical sequence with perfect spacing, but with expressions that look entirely disconnected. If your dancers are so fiercely focused on keeping their lines clean that they look terrified to break character or connect with the room, the visual impact of your choreography decreases.
A judging panel wants to feel a physical and emotional translation of the music.
Clean lines please the eye, but authentic intention is what shifts the scoresheet.
HOW TO COACH THE "WHY" IN REHEARSAL
To move your team past the safety of a clean checklist and into a standout performance space, try modifying your coaching framework during your next run-through:
Pause the Technical Cleaning: Step away from matching arms for just ten minutes. Turn off the music, gather your dancers, and ask them: What is the exact mood of this section? What are you expressing right here? If they cannot put it into words, they cannot put it into their bodies.
Change Your Perspective: Stand the furthest away in your studio space to watch a full run-through. Even try to get into a gym or auditorium. If your dancers' emotional performance and physical intention do not clearly reach you back there, it will not cross the judging table at a major venue.
Give Permission to Fail: Explicitly tell your dancers that, in this practice, you give them total permission to make a spacing mistake or miss an accent if it means they are executing the movement with 100% emotional and physical intention.
Clean is your beautiful foundation. Performance intention is your competitive breakthrough. Let’s take your routine past the basic baseline checklist and give it real impact.
