Beyond the Marley: Crafting Power Statements for Performance Readines

Impact Dance Consulting Beyond The Marley- The Art of Power Statements: How simple "I AM" phrases rewire your brain before taking the stage. Original post date Novemeber 6, 2026. Rewrite of “Personal Power Statements” May 2025.

If you have ever stood in the wings feeling your pulse quicken right before your music plays, you know that performance readiness is just as much mental as it is physical.

Many elite athletes and dancers use repeating phrases, what I call Power Statements, to ground their focus and step onto the floor with full self-belief. These aren't just empty fluff; positive self-thought creates measurable physical shifts. Research shows that repeating empowering phrases helps lower cortisol levels (reducing physical stress), calms your heart rate, and strengthens neural pathways in the brain to heighten focus under pressure.

THE POWER OF "I AM"

When you are waiting backstage, "I AM" statements align your mind and body with the energy you want to bring onto the floor. Unlike generic encouragement, "I AM" statements speak to your identity in the present moment:

  • I AM Focused

  • I AM Strong

  • I AM Calm

  • I AM Ready

  • I AM Grounded

HOW TO BUILD YOUR PRE-PERFORMANCE POWER STATEMENTS

To take your backstage preparation to the next level, craft personalized Power Statements using these three rules:

  1. Keep Them Short & Positive: Short phrases are easy to recall when adrenaline spikes. Focus entirely on what you want to experience rather than what you are trying to avoid.

  2. Tailor to Your Environment: Create distinct statements for different settings. Maybe one set for grueling studio rehearsals, one set for waiting in the wings, and one set for general daily encouragement.

  3. Practice Before You Need Them: Mental habits require muscle memory just like physical technique. Pair your Power Statements with calm, centered breathing (such as the 4-7-8 method), close your eyes, and visualize yourself executing with ease. When you step behind the stage, your mind will already know the way.

Strengthening your mental game is essential care for your craft. When you nurture your mind behind the movement, you show up on the floor as a calmer, more confident dancer.
