MINDSET CHECK: GET OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE

A Dose Of Danspiration- Mindset Check- “Get Outside Your Comfort Zone”

To find comfort is an innate aspect of being human. This is driven by the body and mind’s fundamental desire of safety, security, and ease.

Have you been faced with a challenge and been told, “get out of your comfort zone?”  This phrase is commonly used by coaches/teachers because when we leave our comfort zone, that is where our greatest growth happens. If you are new to this feeling of discomfort or wondering what you can do to leave your comfort zone, here are a few ideas.

1.       LEARN A NEW SKILL: Learning a new skill or practicing something you consider to be a challenge is a way to push beyond your comfort zone. Doing new or difficult things is an important part of learning and can push you beyond what you believed you were capable of. Remember, the only limits that exist are those in your mind!

 

2.       ASKING FOR FEEDBACK: Sometimes asking a coach/teacher for feedback can be uncomfortable. The unknown of what will be said, can cause a person to practice avoidance. Having the courage to push yourself to have the conversation and understanding that the feedback isn’t against you, but for you, is important to your development and growth. Remind yourself that though the feedback may not be something you want to hear, receive the critique as a gift, as someone saying: “I believe in you and your ability to achieve more.”

 

3.       PUSH YOURSELF PHYSICALLY: While training outside of practice, you can push yourself to limits you didn’t know existed. Whether it be in stamina, flexibility, strength training, etc. you can cater your approach to do things your body hasn’t done before, and that can be uncomfortable. By doing so, you will find that what was uncomfortable to begin with becomes natural with time and commitment.

It is not easy to purposefully make yourself uncomfortable. That is why it’s an important mental approach that can set you apart from other dancers. The more you push yourself out of your comfort zone, the more you develop the tools and resiliency to handle whatever challenges dance or even life hands you!

Your greatness lies beyond your comfort zone. Believe and trust in the yourself! Believe in the possibilities of you!
