DANCER CHECK-IN- “ONE MONTH, ONE GOAL!”
Time to get out those journals!
Why should you set goals? Setting goals in dance is like charting a roadmap for your dance journey. It provides you with direction, motivation, and a sense of purpose.
This month, I challenge you to pick ONE goal to focus on. That one goal that you want in your heart, but haven’t been able to get the motivation to start the process.
For an example, let’s say the goal is to have a consistent triple pirouette.
It isn’t enough to say to yourself “I will have a consistent triple pirouette.”
Great, you know WHAT you want, now you need to determine HOW you are going to achieve this.
Start by beginning with the end in mind (the long term).
This goal will guide you in setting priorities and focus points. Looking beyond one season maybe unrealistic as the world, circumstances, focus, and motivation can change. What do you want to have happen in 1 year? Set aside your fear, be realistic, and overcome your own mental limits. DREAM BIG!
Then work backwards to determine the immediate action needed to work towards the long-term goal.
Let’s take a look at achieving a triple pirouette in terms of long term (1-3 years) and immediate goals (actions that can be implemented in the next 24 hours – 1 month).
Long-Term Goal- Consistent triple pirouette
Pick 2-3 Immediate Goals (24 hours-1 month):
1.Do 10 passé balances on each side, every day, working to increase my balance time. I will track my daily times in my reflection journal.
2.Do core [specific strengthening exercises], 3 times/ week (A great resource for dance focused exercises: DancerFitness.com.)
3.Every day, I will do 10 spot drills. Focusing on keeping my head level and my eyes focused front, and out to the audience.
Take the next 30 days and focus on implementing the Immediate Goals to your long-term goal. Once you have implemented your immediate goals, look to add Short-Term Goals (1month-6month) and Midterm Goals (6months-1 Year).**
