DANCER CHECK-IN: THE POWER OF TEAM REFLECTION

A Dose Of Danspiration- “Dancer Check-In: Emotion Check- The Power Of Team Reflection”

As coaches, we spend countless hours planning practices, perfecting routines, and pushing our athletes to perform their best. But sometimes, the most impactful thing we can do isn’t another drill or choreography adjustment, it’s taking a moment to listen to where our team truly is, mentally and emotionally.

Here’s a simple yet powerful activity to help you take the pulse of your dancers:

Step 1: Reflect as a Coach

Before diving in with your team, pause for a moment yourself. Ask:

  • “When I say [Insert season end competition/performance; for example, State or Nationals], what’s the first feeling or word that comes to mind?”

Then consider:

  • “If I were to describe how I feel about our season, practices, and competitions right now, what one word would I use?”

Your honest response will help set the tone for how you interpret your dancers’ answers later on.

Step 2: Check In With Your Team

Give each dancer a notecard and ask them to respond to the same questions:

  • What’s the first word or feeling that comes to mind when you hear [insert same final competition/performance as Step 1]?

  • If you could describe how you feel about our season, practices, and competitions right now, what word would you choose?

Keep it anonymous. Have everyone write in pencil or the same color pen to maintain consistency.

Step 3: Gather and Reflect

Collect the cards and take a few moments to review them. What themes stand out?

  • Are dancers feeling tired or burned out?

  • Are they excited and energized?

  • Are they nervous or unsure?

This simple exercise gives you a clear snapshot of your team’s collective mindset.

Step 4: Adapt Your Coaching

Once you’ve identified where your dancers are emotionally, use that insight to guide your approach.

  • If the team is running low on energy, maybe they need a lighter practice or a team-building day.

  • If they’re anxious, focus on confidence-building and reassurance.

  • If they’re excited, channel that enthusiasm into refining details and pushing for excellence.

By regularly checking in with your team, you strengthen trust, communication, and emotional awareness; three key ingredients for long-term success.
