THE THOUGHT CYCLE
A Dose Of Danspraton- “The Thought Cycle” Originally posted September 16,2024
Have you heard of the THOUGHT CYCLE?
This is a psychological phenomenon that affects all our actions/behaviors.
In summary:
Our THOUGHTS/BELIEFS become our FEELINGS.
Our FEELINGS become our ACTIONS.
Our ACTIONS produce a RESULT.
Our RESULTS create our THOUGHTS/BELIEFS and the cycle continues. (See Diagram Below)
A Dose Of Danspiraton- Thought Cycle Chart
It is essential that we think & speak to ourselves in a positive manner. This will naturally nurture positive feelings, motivating us to act towards our initial belief, and creating the results we are desire.
Often coaches and mentors will address negative self-talk when verbally expressed.
For example, “In this classroom, we do not say can’t, only can.”
YET, are the dancers aware that the thoughts that they carry in their mind, that they think affect no one, but themselves, ACTUALLY impact everyone?
Let’s revisit the THOUGHT CYCLE….
· Internal Thought/Belief- “I am not a good jumper”
· Feelings- Negativity and self-conscious every time asked to jump/leap.
· Action- Less effort because, “It is going to be bad anyway.”
· Result- When asked to execute, the jump is not at the expectation of the teacher/coach. (The private thought now affects the individual AND the team OUTSIDE of the personal mental space!!!!)
· Thought/Belief- “See, I’m a bad jumper”
“BUT my jumps ARE low!”
OKAY, so it’s something you need to WORK on. EVERY dancer has SOMETHING they need to work on. Tell yourself, you ARE a jumper, say it OUT LOUD and work on it!!!
“I AM a jumper and through my hard work, each day I get better and better!”
Positive self -talk starts with POSITIVE SELF-THOUGHTS and grows from there!! Pull the weeds & plant positive seeds!
