FOCUS ON IMPROVING VS. PROVING
A Dose Of Danspiraton- Focus on Improving vs. Proving Originally posted April 2023
PROVING COMPETENCY...This desire is engrained deep into my daughter's personality. Her favorite sentence as a toddler was "I DO IT!" When she finds herself in a position where she feels she is "failing" at proving her competency, she shuts down. She wants to be the best at EVERYTHING she does. She HATES to acknowledge when she needs more time or help. She believes it makes her “less than” others. During one of her meltdowns, I said these words to her and it stopped her in her tracks, helping her to approach her challenge differently.
“The best student is NOT the one who is “perfect,” it’s the one who admits when they need help and refuse to give up.”
This moment made me think of all those dancers with this same drive to PROVE THEIR COMPETENCY. How there maybe a dancer that needs to hear these words too.
The dancers who have defined "The Best = Perfect." The dancer that closes in on themselves, gets frustrated or embarrassed when they don’t immediately understand or cannot execute an expectation on the first or even second attempt when others in the class can.
That they too need to be reminded, that even those who are defined as the "epitome" or "standard" in the dance world, STRUGGLE! Yet, the qualities they all share are the desire to continue to LEARN and PERSEVERANCE.
No matter what your challenge or obstacle is, ask for help, learn, but most importantly, NEVER GIVE UP!
